Pregnancy is a beautiful part of life, but leads to significant new responsibilities. Constant work goes into providing the best care for a little one. Certain dieting and health adjustments are crucial, including proper vitamins and minerals.

A study at Purdue University looked at the dietary intake data of 1,003 pregnant women in the U.S. Overall, their diets contained too much sodium and not enough vitamins and minerals.

A large number of participants showed a lack of vitamins A, C, D, E, K, and B6, along with folate, choline and minerals iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

This is alarming!

A deficit of the proper vitamins and minerals can lead to issues during pregnancy and birth. For example, anemia can be caused by a lack of Iron. This can lead to preterm delivery, low birth weight, and even death in the baby, according to the Mayo Clinic.

"Without dietary supplements, 80 to 95 percent of pregnant women would fail to achieve iron recommendations," - Regan Bailey, an associate professor in nutrition science at Purdue University.

Do not fall short of the proper intake of vitamins and minerals. Find supplements and foods that will serve as adequate sources for the nutrients you need. Be sure to consult your doctor to see which supplements are best for you.
